About Union Hill

Where to stay in Union Hill

Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.

Union Hill puts its lodging on Main Street, at the western edge, where a hotel stands at 3001 Main Street one block north of the streetcar stop. The platform carries the neighbourhood's name. From it the line runs north past the National World War I Memorial to Union Station and downtown Kansas City, and south through Westport toward the Country Club Plaza.

Choose this edge if you want Union Cemetery behind you rather than a shopping floor.

About Union Hill

What are the main landmarks in Union Hill?

Union Cemetery is the landmark of Union Hill, 49 acres deeded in 1857 and a public park since 1937, with its sexton's cottage kept as an office and museum. The painter George Caleb Bingham lies here. The Union Confederate Monument rises among the graves, a granite obelisk raised in 1911 for 15 Confederate prisoners taken at the Battle of Westport.

Off the grass, the Greenlease Cadillac Building stands at 2900 Gillham Road. Across the graves the KCTV Tower marks the southern edge at 31st Street and Grand Boulevard, a steel lattice mast finished in 1956.

What is the history of Union Hill?

Union Hill grew around a burial ground laid out in 1857, after cholera filled the graveyards of Westport and the town of Kansas and the two settlements went looking for shared ground. James M. Hunter deeded the farmland. His 49 acres ran from Main Street east to Oak Street between 27th and 30th streets, and the association sold the north-west 19 acres at 27th and Main in 1916.

Fire took the burial records in August 1889. The city accepted the deed in 1936 and opened the ground as a park the year after. Crown Center's blocks north of East 27th Street were once part of the same neighbourhood.
