Houses give way to workshops before Manchester Avenue closes the neighbourhood off, a street carrying through traffic and the antique trade rather than hotel signs. The Hill begins across Manchester Avenue, Clayton-Tamm across Hampton Avenue. Stay in Cheltenham if you want Forest Park at the end of the street and a base well clear of downtown St. Louis.

Cheltenham keeps few monuments. St. Louis Community College at Forest Park holds the northern end along Oakland Avenue, standing on the ground the Forest Park Highlands amusement park occupied until fire took it in 1963. Oakview Place Apartments, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, stand on Oakview Place.
The St. Louis Arena stood west of the campus until 1999, and flats and offices cover its plot. The rest is street: Macklind Avenue east, Manchester Avenue south, Berthold Avenue through the middle.
What is the history of Cheltenham?
Cheltenham was mining ground first. The works that carried its name, the Cheltenham Fireclay Works, dated from 1855, and clay and coal came out from under the neighbourhood through the second half of the nineteenth century. A French utopian colony followed.
On 15 February 1858 the Icarians who had followed Etienne Cabet out of Nauvoo bought a few hundred acres in Cheltenham, opened workshops for tailors, joiners and blacksmiths, then split a year later over a pledge banning tobacco and drink; the last of them handed the keys back to Thomas Allen in 1864. Cheltenham once took in Clayton-Tamm as well.
