The gates are the landmarks in DeBaliviere Place. A French Norman clock tower by Harvey Ellis and George R. Mann stands at the Union Boulevard end of Washington Terrace, and Clare Pfeifer Garrett's bronze Awakening of Spring tops the Union gate at Kingsbury Place, one of three Beaux-Arts entries by Thomas P. Barnett. Waterman Place repeats it one street south.
All three lie inside the Waterman Place-Kingsbury Place-Washington Terrace Historic District. Forest Park-DeBaliviere station is the other fixed point.
What is the history of DeBaliviere Place?
DeBaliviere Place was laid out as private ground. Julius Pitzman, the surveyor behind most of the private places inside St. Louis, platted Washington Terrace and its fifty lots around 1892, and Kingsbury Place followed in 1902. Pitzman took number 6 for himself.
Owners set their houses on pedestals before the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition opened south of Lindell Boulevard. The city named Kingsbury Place a landmark district in 1973, and the three streets went on the National Register together in 2007.
