Downtown West, St. Louis — Area Guide & Where to Stay

Downtown West is the inland half of downtown, stretching from Tucker Boulevard west to Jefferson Avenue in St. Louis.

About Downtown West

Where to stay in Downtown West

The right area depends on your trip — here's what each neighbourhood is best for.

The choice here runs along Washington Avenue, where the converted garment warehouses put rooms, restaurants, taverns, and coffee shops in the same block. Enterprise Center and Stifel Theatre are a short walk off. Stay nearer St.

Louis Union Station for the western end of the grid, nearer Energizer Park and Jefferson Avenue, if you would rather sleep away from the late trade on the avenue.

About Downtown West

What are the main landmarks in Downtown West?

Washington Avenue carries most of it. The Washington Avenue Historic District lines up the high-rise garment warehouses that were converted into residential lofts, restaurants, taverns, and coffee shops, with the City Museum among them. Stifel Theatre and Enterprise Center take the evening crowd.

Campbell House Museum and the Scott Joplin House State Historic Site keep two named houses in the same grid, quieter stops than the theatre and the arena.

What is the history of Downtown West?

The Washington Avenue Historic District dates this neighborhood, not a charter. Its high-rise warehouses were raised as a garment district, and were later converted into residential lofts, restaurants, taverns, and coffee shops that line the street. Downtown West names its position, not its age.

This is the section of downtown that lies further inland, west from the banks of the Mississippi River, with St. Louis City Hall and the Metropolitan Police Headquarters inside the same bounds.

Where is Downtown West?

Cole Street closes Downtown West to the north and Chouteau Avenue to the south, with the Mississippi River lying beyond Tucker Boulevard and the older downtown blocks.
