Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.
Ellendale is a place of single-family houses rather than hotels, so a stay here means a bed on one of its edges. Manchester Avenue carries Route 100 along the northern boundary, and west across the city limits the Maplewood-Manchester station puts the MetroLink Blue Line within reach of the western streets. That station opened in 2006.
Choose the Maplewood side if you want rail into the centre and a quiet street at night. Inside the boundary it is houses, small trade, and the St. Louis Marketplace centre at Manchester and Abbott.

What are the main landmarks in Ellendale?
Ellendale's largest landmark is its own ground: the Scullin Steel works stood at Manchester and Abbott, and the St. Louis Marketplace retail centre covers the site. Railroad tracks had to be diverted to lay it out. The company also put a soccer team into the St. Louis Soccer League in 1918, and St. Louis Scullin Steel took the National Challenge Cup of 1922.
The works went; the tracks stayed. Freight still crosses the valley floor, where BNSF's Lindenwood Yard spreads over the low ground and Union Pacific track runs beside it. Neither the Saint Louis Zoo nor St. Ambrose Church stands inside the boundary streets.
What is the history of Ellendale?
Ellendale began on land owned by James E. Sutton, who died in 1877 and left it among his nine children; his daughter Kate Thomas started the neighbourhood. Clay came first. Fire clay had been cut from this ground since the 1850s, when the Pacific Railroad drove its line through, and the coal found alongside it proved too thin to work.
Electric streetcars reached the area in 1896. The houses that went up after the World's Fair of 1904 were built mostly for Scullin Steel's executives, and they still stand.

Ellendale fills the River des Peres valley between Manchester Avenue and Interstate 44, closed off by Hampton Avenue east and the St. Louis city limits west.
