The Gate District is mostly houses and the Saint Louis University School of Medicine, so a bed means one of the boundary streets. South Grand Boulevard runs the western edge past the medical campus, and the #70 Grand bus climbs it to Grand station, where the MetroLink Red and Blue lines cross the city. Chouteau Avenue takes the north side.
South Jefferson Avenue closes the east, nearest to Lafayette Square. Take the Grand Boulevard end if you want the trains; take the Jefferson end to sit nearer the older streets.

Barr Branch is the library.
South Jefferson Avenue carries it at 1701 and the Du-Good Chemical Laboratory Building at 1215-23. The Immaculate Conception School stands at 2912 Lafayette Avenue and the Lafayette Garage and Repair Company Building at 2710-2716 Lafayette Avenue. The Compton Hill Water Tower stands south of Interstate 44.
What is the history of Gate District?
Compton Hill was the older name for the ground the Gate District occupies, a working-class grid of houses close to the rail lands along Chouteau Avenue. Maya Angelou was born in one of them, at 3120 Hickory Street, on 4 April 1928. The National Register came late here.
Immaculate Conception School was listed in 1985. The Pevely Dairy Company Buildings followed in 2006, the Lafayette Garage and Repair Company Building in 2011, and the Du-Good Chemical Laboratory Building in 2017.
Where is Gate District?
The Gate District runs west from South Jefferson Avenue to South Grand Boulevard, with Chouteau Avenue over the top and Interstate 44 cutting the southern edge.
