Kingshighway Boulevard runs south from the Natural Bridge Avenue corner past Dr. Martin Luther King Drive to the Central West End, where the hospital district and Forest Park hold most of the rooms a visitor to this part of St.
Louis will find. Stay out there if you want a walkable evening and a short drive back up to W. C. Handy Park in the morning.

What are the main landmarks in Kingsway East?
Cupples School stands empty at 4908 Cote Brilliante Avenue, a Rockwell Milligan design of 1918 that the Board of Education shut in 2003. North Side Community School keeps a campus at 3033 North Euclid Avenue. W. C. Handy Park spreads over nearly 12 acres off Ashland Avenue, established in 1941 and named for the composer of Saint Louis Blues.
A recreation center sits inside it. Marcus Avenue and Kingshighway Boulevard fence out every National Register listing on this side of the city.
What is the history of Kingsway East?
These blocks belong to an older section called Arlington, named after John W. Burd's Arlington Grove subdivision of 1868. Frame cottages came first, on farmland. Brick bungalows and apartment rows filled the streets between 1900 and 1920, which is why the housing stock reads as one generation with older wooden survivors scattered through it.
Fire took the Christian Brothers College building in the Arlington area in October 1916 and killed ten. Cupples School opened two years later.
Where is Kingsway East?
Kingsway East fills a wedge of north St. Louis between Natural Bridge Avenue and Marcus Avenue. Kingshighway Boulevard closes it west.
