Luther Yard is the fixed point of North Riverfront, a classification yard the Wabash Railroad laid out on East Carrie Avenue in 1890. The original works held a 15-stall roundhouse, coal chutes, an oil house, and scales. Norfolk Southern operates it.
At 8000 Hall Street stands the assembly plant where the St. Louis Car Company built Birney Safety Cars, PCC streetcars, and the R44 subway cars sent to New York, and it carries on as the St. Louis Business Center. The St. Louis Riverfront Trail runs east of both, on the Mississippi River bank.

North Riverfront's earliest dated works are industrial: the Wabash Railroad built Luther Yard on East Carrie Avenue in 1890 as the classification yard for its whole system. It took thirty acres of ground. The St. Louis Car Company had formed three years earlier, and from its plant at 8000 Hall Street came Birney Safety Cars from 1915, PCC streetcars from 1936, and cars for the Paris Metro, until the firm ceased operations in 1974.
