St. Louis Place is a north St. Louis neighborhood of brick Victorian streets around St. Louis Place Park, the first linear park the city laid out.

About St. Louis Place

Where to stay in St. Louis Place

Each area has its own feel; here's who each one suits.

No hotel stands along Cass Avenue. Travelers sleep downtown and ride the 74 Florissant bus north up North Florissant Avenue, a line running from the Civic Center Transit Center out to north county. Housing here runs to brick flats, restored Victorian houses, and vacant lots.

The neighborhood suits you if the Griot Museum of Black History, Victorian brickwork along St. Louis Avenue, and a long public lawn matter more than a hotel lobby.

About St. Louis Place

What are the main landmarks in St. Louis Place?

The Griot Museum of Black History stands at 2505 St. Louis Avenue, its core gallery holding life-size wax figures of Dred Scott, Josephine Baker, and Miles Davis. St. Louis Place Park splits the grid. That strip of lawn and canopy trees came out of the 1850 plat and reached six blocks by 1887, the first linear park the city laid out.

Sk8 Liborius fills the shuttered St. Liborius church of 1889. St. Augustine's Roman Catholic Church came down in 2024 after three fires, its bell tower spared. The Union Grounds ballpark stood beside Jefferson Avenue until 1888.

What is the history of St. Louis Place?

John O'Fallon and his partners platted these blocks in 1850 as part of the Union Addition, keeping a strip down the center of the subdivision for public use. German and Irish families filled the streets through the 1870s and raised the ornate brick houses of St. Louis Avenue; Polish and Jewish arrivals followed. Then the losses began.

Parishes emptied, and St. Liborius closed in 1992. The National Register listed the St. Louis Place Historic District in 2011, six years before fire gutted the Clemens House. Crews cleared blocks north of Cass Avenue from 2019 for the Next NGA West campus.

Where is St. Louis Place?

Palm Street closes the north edge, Cass Avenue the south, North Florissant Avenue the east and Jefferson Avenue the west, northwest of downtown St. Louis.
