Vandeventer is residential from Delmar Boulevard up to Dr. Martin Luther King Drive, so a bed here means crossing one of the four streets that close it. The Central West End begins on the far kerb of Delmar Boulevard, and its rooms are the nearest to the district. East over Vandeventer Avenue, the Grand Center Arts District puts the concert halls a short ride away, which suits you best when the evening is already booked. Lewis Place, west across Newstead Avenue, is houses again.

What are the main landmarks in Vandeventer?
Vandeventer keeps domestic landmarks. Forty-Eleven Delmar, an apartment building on the Delmar Boulevard edge, went onto the National Register in 2008. Enright Avenue carries the Block Unit No. 1 Historic District, forty-six buildings listed together in 2000.
Page Boulevard cuts the middle, with Finney Avenue and West Belle Place running parallel to it through the blocks between Vandeventer Avenue and Newstead Avenue. Ranken Technical College fills the corner immediately west across Newstead Avenue, outside the neighbourhood line.
What is the history of Vandeventer?
Vandeventer holds the sites of two institutions built for Black St. Louis under segregation, Douglass University and the Douglass Theatre. The university opened in 1926 and taught out of rented rooms on Enright Avenue and on West Belle Place, a few doors apart. Finney Avenue ran the picture houses.
The Douglass Theatre and the Venus Theatre both stood on it, both served audiences barred from the downtown screens, and neither building is left. Page Boulevard still crosses from Vandeventer Avenue to Newstead Avenue, and the street plan outlasted them all.
