Broadway-Fillmore has scarcely a hotel bed of its own, and the practical base for the Broadway Market is downtown Buffalo, about 2.5 miles west. The district reads best on foot along Broadway, between Fillmore Avenue and the Central Terminal. Dyngus Day is the exception.
Polka bands and the Easter queues at 999 Broadway pull crowds the East Side cannot bed, so you would book downtown well ahead.

Broadway-Fillmore's landmarks are a market hall and a railway terminal. The Broadway Market has sold at 999 Broadway since 1888, and the shed standing over the stalls went up in 1956, packed each spring with butter lambs and Polish sausage. Buffalo Central Terminal rises at 495 Paderewski Drive, a 17-story Art Deco tower that Fellheimer and Wagner finished in 1929 and the railroads left in 1979.

What is the history of Broadway-Fillmore?
Broadway-Fillmore took shape with the Polish migration that reached Buffalo's East Side in the 1870s. Jan Pitass founded the parish of St. Stanislaus in 1873, the first Polish parish in the city, and the flint-stone church at 123 Townsend Street was finished in 1886. Stalls followed at 999 Broadway.
Buffalo's East Side became the second largest Polish-American community in the United States, and Broadway-Fillmore was its core. Deindustrialization and a steady move out to Cheektowaga hollowed the district in the decades after 1950.
