Hertel Avenue feeds visitors better than it sleeps them. Parkside suits anyone who wants leafy curving streets, with the Buffalo Zoo, the Darwin D. Martin House and a bed-and-breakfast in an 1890s house on Woodward Avenue all inside one walk. Hotels sit mostly in suburban Amherst.
Metro Rail links Amherst Street station and LaSalle station to downtown along Main Street, which puts the district's restaurants within reach of a room elsewhere in the city.

What are the main landmarks in North Buffalo?
Frank Lloyd Wright shaped two Prairie houses on one estate here: the Darwin D. Martin House at 125 Jewett Parkway, and the smaller George Barton House at 118 Summit Avenue, which Martin commissioned first as a test of the architect. Guided tours reach both houses. The North Park Theatre opened at 1428 Hertel Avenue in 1920, and its recessed dome and proscenium carry murals by Raphael Beck.
Delaware Park holds the Buffalo Zoo at 300 Parkside Avenue, founded in 1875.
What is the history of North Buffalo?
Lewis Jackson Bennett bought land here for limestone, founded the Buffalo Cement Company in 1877, and a decade later platted the Central Park subdivision on the quarry's ground with his son. Frederick Law Olmsted had already drawn the curving streets of Parkside. Jewish families settled from the 1920s, and from the 1950s until the late 1970s North Buffalo held the heart of Buffalo's Jewish community, while Italian families followed from the West Side in the 1970s and 1980s.
The Italian Heritage Festival moved to Hertel Avenue in 1988. Cornelius Creek went under the pavement.
Where is North Buffalo?
The district lies flat between the Kenmore line and Delaware Park, with Elmwood Avenue closing its western edge and Main Street its eastern.
