Shea's Performing Arts Center is the anchor. Shea's 710 Theatre and Shea's Smith Theatre carry the same name, and the Alleyway Theatre, the Irish Classical Theatre Company and Road Less Traveled Productions fill out a district that once counted more than fifty theatres. Broadway tours stop here on their way through.
What is the history of Buffalo Theater District?
The theatres emptied before they came back. Buffalo's years as a railway and canal port filled these streets with more than fifty houses, the 1950s began the decline, and by 1978 the district stood over sixty-five per cent vacant. A master plan under Mayor Jimmy Griffin turned it around, with Harold Cohen and David Parry directing, and the district was formally established in 1980.
