What are the main landmarks in Fargo Estate Historic District?
The Fargo Estate Historic District keeps one of its oldest buildings at 310 Jersey Street, where Engine House No. 2 and Hook and Ladder No. 9 went up in 1875 under a slate mansard roof. Jersey Street holds both district churches, the Gothic West Side Presbyterian Church of 1882 and the limestone Plymouth Methodist Episcopal Church of 1912, the largest religious structure in the district. Life Memorial Park fills a triangular lot at 458 Porter Avenue, laid out in 1992 as an AIDS memorial with a walkway cast as a red ribbon.
Porter Avenue carries part of the Delaware Park-Front Park System. Cobb Alley is the district's only alley.
What is the history of Fargo Estate Historic District?
The Fargo Estate Historic District takes its name from William G. Fargo, who bought two and a half blocks here in 1868 and finished his mansion in 1872. Tenth Street was renamed Fargo Avenue for him in 1869. His grounds ran between Fargo Avenue, Jersey Street, West Avenue, and Pennsylvania Street.
Fargo died in 1881. His heirs sold building lots from the late 1880s, the empty mansion came down in 1900, and Italian-American families moving inland from the waterfront filled the last gaps by 1930.
