Hamlin Park Historic District keeps its landmarks at house scale. The Stone Farmhouse at 60 Hedley Place predates every street around it, its limestone walls eighteen inches thick. The Robert T. Coles House and Studio at 321 Humboldt Parkway is the other individually listed building, designed in 1961 by the architect who then lived in it.
Viola Park is no building at all, but an elliptical green about 150 feet long set in a brick-paved street. Pansy Place and Daisy Place frame it. The Lutheran Church Home of 1906 fronts East Delavan Avenue.
What is the history of Hamlin Park Historic District?
Hamlin Park Historic District grew from two Buffalo tracts developed a generation apart. Cicero J. Hamlin laid out the Buffalo Driving Park on the southern ground in 1868, a harness track that drew crowds of forty thousand in a weekend. Fire took its buildings in 1896.
The Toronto developer John C. Cook bought the tract in 1912 and meant to rename it Melrose Lawn, but Hamlin's name held. North of Northland Avenue, August C. Hager had already cut curving streets across his farm, naming Viola Park and Daisy Place after favourite flowers. Model Cities grants from 1966 to 1975 paid for the porches that kept the houses standing.
