Hertel Avenue trades in kitchens, not beds. North Park is a residential grid of single-family houses and two-flats laid between Delaware Avenue and the Beltline Railroad, and it keeps almost no lodging of its own, so the practical bed is downtown or along the Delaware Avenue corridor to the south. Metro Rail's Amherst Street Station lies east on Main Street.
The No. 23 bus works the Hertel strip, and the No. 11 covers Colvin Avenue. You would base here for the North Park Theatre and the Hertel Avenue bakeries, and ride in for the rest.

The North Park Theatre has screened films at 1428 Hertel Avenue since it opened as Shea's North Park on November 21, 1920, and Raphael Beck's murals still run across the proscenium and the five-paneled dome recessed into its ceiling. Henry Spann drew it in a neoclassical key. Dipson Theatres held the lease until 2013, and an eight-month restoration then uncovered a stained-glass window that had sat behind a concrete panel, with the screen lit again on March 7, 2014.
Buffalo '66 premiered here in June 1998. North Park Lutheran Church stands over on Wingate Avenue.
What is the history of North Park?
Jewish developers put up single-family houses and two-flats around Hertel Avenue in the 1920s, and from the 1950s until the late 1970s North Buffalo served as the center of Buffalo's Jewish life. Shea's opened its North Park house in 1920. Italian-American families moved north from the West Side through the 1970s and 1980s, and the Italian Village Festival left Connecticut Street for Hertel Avenue in 1988.
