Schiller Park, Buffalo — Area Guide & Where to Stay

Schiller Park takes its name from a city park honouring the poet Friedrich Schiller, a neighbourhood on Buffalo's far eastern rim beside Cheektowaga.
About Schiller Park

Where to stay in Schiller Park
Each area has its own feel; here's who each one suits.
Schiller Park keeps no hotel of its own, and the two practical bases lie about four miles away in opposite directions. Downtown Buffalo is the western one. The eastern one follows Genesee Street through the hamlet of Pine Hill into Cheektowaga, where the airport terminal stands at 4200 Genesee Street.
Take the Genesee Street side if you fly in late or out early; downtown suits an evening on foot.
About Schiller Park
What are the main landmarks in Schiller Park?
The landmark of Schiller Park is the park itself, a city green with Sattler Avenue running along its western side. Genesee Street cuts the neighbourhood on the diagonal, the road that carried Buffalo's German families east from the older streets to newer houses around the park. Bailey Avenue closes the west.
Inside those edges stands the building that once housed Turner-Carroll High School, the Catholic school whose basketball teams took New York state titles in 1988, 1998, and 1999. Broadway marks the south, with CSX's Frontier Yard beyond it.
What is the history of Schiller Park?
Schiller Park filled in as Buffalo's German families moved east. Germans had settled the near East Side from the 1840s, and when Polish arrivals took over those streets around 1900 the older community pushed out along Genesee Street toward the town line. Houses followed through the 1920s.
German taverns and restaurants clustered around the city park, while the Polish parishes that mark the rest of Buffalo's East Side stayed nearer downtown.
Where is Schiller Park?
Schiller Park is framed by East Delavan Avenue to the north, Bailey Avenue to the west, and Broadway to the south. Cheektowaga begins beyond.
