Battery Park City, New York City — Area Guide & Where to Stay

Battery Park City is a planned neighborhood on the Hudson River waterfront at Manhattan's southern tip, on land held by New York State.

About Battery Park City

Where to stay in Battery Park City

Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.

The West Side Highway is the dividing line. East of it sit the Financial District and Tribeca, with their hotel stock and subway access; west of it, Battery Park City runs quiet along the Hudson River, and rooms there trade street life for water and open ground. Few hotels stand on the Hudson side.

Travellers who want the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, Castle Clinton and the Museum of Jewish Heritage within walking distance usually book on the Financial District side and cross over on foot.

About Battery Park City

What are the main landmarks in Battery Park City?

Collections carry most of the day here. The Museum of Jewish Heritage stands on the Battery Park City waterfront, the Skyscraper Museum sits a few blocks along, and the Museum of American Finance and the Museum of Chinese in America fill out the walk east of the West Side Highway. Castle Clinton anchors The Battery.

Beside it the SeaGlass Carousel turns, while the East Coast Memorial marks the harbour edge and the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, the World Trade Center cross and One World Observatory pull the crowds inland. Trinity Church predates all of it.

What is the history of Battery Park City?

The name comes from The Battery. That older shoreline park, once called Battery Park, lies directly south, and the neighborhood raised beside it carried the name onto ground that had not been there before. Everything here is planned.

Battery Park City stands on state-owned land run by the Battery Park City Authority, a New York State public-benefit corporation, which is why its grid reads differently from the older lanes around Trinity Church and the Church of the Transfiguration. Castle Clinton and the Gideon Tucker House survive from the Lower Manhattan the plan was laid against.

Where is Battery Park City?

Battery Park City occupies the Hudson River waterfront at the southern tip of Manhattan, with The Battery just south and the West Side Highway along its inland edge.
