What is the history of East Village?
The Lower East Side came first. The East Village was counted as part of it before the name split off, and the immigrant streets of that older district survive in the Bialystoker Synagogue, the Tenement Museum, and the Ukrainian Museum. Older houses remain as well, among them the Merchant's House Museum and the Stephen Van Rensselaer House.
