What is the history of Highbridge?
Highbridge takes its name from the old aqueduct crossing that once carried water above the river to New York City. The neighbourhood grew as a working-class quarter of the Bronx, tightly built along the ridge, long before Yankee Stadium rose to pull crowds up from Manhattan on every game day. Its identity shifted with the ballpark.
When the stadium opened, the surrounding blocks turned toward the game, and later Monument Park gave the district a shrine of plaques honouring the players who had made the club famous.
