Most visitors book further down Manhattan, or in Washington Heights just to the south, and ride north for The Cloisters and Dyckman House rather than sleeping beside them. The neighbourhood itself runs to apartment blocks between the Hudson River and the Harlem River, quiet in the evening, with Marble Hill and Spuyten Duyvil Creek closing off the far end.

The Cloisters crowns the high ground above the Hudson River, and its collection draws visitors north through Inwood. Nearby stands Dyckman House. Built as a house rather than a hall, it keeps a low frame on streets that rose around it in apartment blocks, and it reads as the oldest thing in view.
Parish churches carry the rest of the record here, from the Church of the Good Shepherd to Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Church and Edgehill Church at Spuyten Duyvil. Athletic grounds take up much of the remaining space, with the Campbell Sports Center among them.
