Hillsboro is four towns at once. Orenco carries the dense blocks and the evening life, Central Hillsboro carries the county business around the Washington County Jail, and the industrial ground by the airport carries the hotels that contract workers actually book. South Hillsboro is the fourth.
Farmland there is turning into subdivisions at speed, though Imbrie Farm still stands as a reminder of what the whole of this part of Washington County looked like before the technology money arrived. Choose by errand, not by view. Anyone here for Intel or another Silicon Forest employer will want the airport side, where the hotels sit close to the plants and nothing else competes for the evening.
Orenco suits a longer stay. Its high-density streets give the visitor something to walk to after work, and the Next Level Pinball Museum, the Rice Northwest Museum of Rocks and Minerals and the Shute Park Aquatic & Recreation Center are all within reach of a car ride. Central Hillsboro is the compromise, close enough to the courthouse for county business and close enough to Orenco that dinner is not a project.
Portland is the fallback when the county fills.

Hillsboro dates from 1841. Farming families settled the Tualatin Valley floor and built the town that became the seat of Washington County, and Imbrie Farm survives from that period as clearly as anything in the county does. Old family homes carry the rest of it.
The Charles Shorey House, the Rice-Gates House, the Malcolm McDonald House and the Edward Schulmerich House belong to the merchants and farmers who ran a country town long before anyone thought of building semiconductors here. Nothing about that century suggested what came next. The county business stayed put.
Hillsboro has held the courthouse and the Washington County Jail throughout, which is why the older downtown blocks kept a civic weight that a suburb of the Portland metropolitan area would not otherwise have earned. Intel rewrote the town. High-technology plants turned the fields at the edges into the Silicon Forest, brought a workforce that needed housing at density, and produced Orenco, which was built to a plan no earlier generation in Washington County would have recognised.
The Sonrise Church and Linklater Commons belong to that later town rather than to the farming one. South Hillsboro is going the same way, subdivision by subdivision.
Where is Hillsboro?
Flat ground made the sprawl easy. Hillsboro spreads across the Tualatin Valley with room on every side, which is how a county seat came to hold industrial estates by the airport, farmland in South Hillsboro and planned density at Orenco all at once. Portland lies beyond the edge.
Suburban building continues toward the city with no real break, so the line between the Portland metropolitan area and Washington County shows on a map and nowhere else.
What is the climate of Hillsboro?
Winters are wet and dim. Rain comes steadily rather than hard, and the temperate band keeps the cold mild enough that the season is measured in grey days rather than in frost, which is why indoor plans matter here. The museums earn their keep.
The Next Level Pinball Museum, the Classic Aircraft Aviation Museum and the Shute Park Aquatic & Recreation Center absorb the wet afternoons, and the dry stretch from midsummer into autumn is when Orenco and the older downtown are worth walking.
How do you get to Hillsboro?
Most people arrive from Portland. The wider metropolitan area supplies the long-haul connections, and the run out to Hillsboro through the Tualatin Valley is short enough that visitors treat it as part of the airport transfer rather than a journey of its own. Orenco is the exception.
Its high-density blocks put shops and food within a walk, so a stay there works without a car in a way that the industrial ground by the Hillsboro airport and the subdivisions of South Hillsboro never will.
