What are the main landmarks in Kerrisdale?
Kerrisdale's landmarks cluster at its edges rather than a single core. The Kerrisdale Arena, a community ice rink on East Boulevard, has served the neighbourhood for generations and still hosts hockey, skating, and public events. Its history runs deeper still.
Just southeast, in neighbouring Marpole, the Great Marpole Midden marks one of the largest ancient Coast Salish settlement sites on the river, protected as a national historic site. East along West 41st Avenue, near Oak Street, the VanDusen Botanical Garden Visitor Centre fronts the botanical garden's grounds with its curving green roof.
What is the history of Kerrisdale?
Long before the streets were laid, the land around the north arm of the Fraser River was Musqueam territory, and the Great Marpole Midden just southeast preserves thousands of years of that Coast Salish settlement. European settlement came late in the nineteenth century, and Kerrisdale took shape around a station on the interurban railway running south out of Vancouver. For a time it governed itself.
The area belonged to the Municipality of Point Grey until that municipality joined the City of Vancouver in 1929, folding Kerrisdale into the growing city. Through the twentieth century it settled into the residential shopping district that West Boulevard still serves.
Where is Kerrisdale?
Kerrisdale spreads across the gentle slope of southwest Vancouver, with West 41st Avenue crossing it east to west and the shopping blocks gathered along West Boulevard and East Boulevard. Between them runs the old interurban rail line. To the north lies Arbutus-Ridge, while Dunbar-Southlands sits to the west and Oakridge to the east.
Southward the streets drop toward Marpole and the north arm of the Fraser River.
