Trois-Rivières was born in the first days of New France. In 1634 the French set a fur-trading post here on the Saint Lawrence, only twenty-six years after Quebec, and the town grew as a base for the trade and the missions of the great river. Nuns came to teach and heal.
The Ursuline sisters built a convent and a hospital that still stand, and the little town gathered its stone houses and churches on the north shore. The river gave the town its trades. For long years Trois-Rivières lived by the fur trade, the old ironworks up the Saint-Maurice, and the timber floated down from the north.
Then paper made it rich. The great forests of the north fed huge pulp and paper mills on the river, and the town became for a time the paper capital of the world. The old convents still stand by the river.
