Lemba keeps most of its beds close to the campus. The guesthouses above Mbanza-Lemba serve the steady traffic of the University of Kinshasa, filling around term-time and graduation, so book ahead if a ceremony pulls you here. Down in the Livulu quarter the mood shifts to trade, and rooms sit among markets and the taxi-buses that thread back toward central Kinshasa.
Choose the Salongo edge instead and you wake nearer the green slopes above the Matete River, an easy reach of the University Museum of Kinshasa. Beds are modest. There is no hotel row here.

The campus is the draw. The University of Kinshasa, founded on the hill as Lovanium, spreads its faculties and jacaranda avenues across Mbanza-Lemba, and the University Museum of Kinshasa holds its ethnographic collections on the same grounds. Science left a rarer mark.
The Regional Center for Nuclear Studies stands on the university land, home to the TRICO reactor that was the first of its kind on the African continent. Beyond the campus the commune is residential. The Livulu and Salongo quarters run in tight streets down toward the Matete River, more lived-in than sightseen.
What is the history of Lemba?
The university made the place. In the mid-twentieth century the University of Kinshasa opened on the Lemba hill as Lovanium, and its science and medical faculties gave their land to the Regional Center for Nuclear Studies, whose TRICO reactor started up as the first on the African continent. Housing followed the campus.
Quarters such as Mbanza-Lemba, Livulu, and Salongo filled the slopes as Kinshasa grew southward and staff, students, and traders settled around the gates. Through the sprawl, the name stuck to the hill. Lemba kept its identity as the learning commune long after the wider city spread past it.
