Ngaliema takes its name from the hill and chief recorded on the early river stations above the Congo River. Trade came by water. The commune grew as Kinshasa spread west from its colonial core, filling the wooded rise between the river and the inland communes with residences, missions and later the grounds that would hold the National Museum of Kinshasa.
