Dapeng Fortress is the anchor. The walled garrison town, built in 1394 against coastal pirates, gives Dapeng New District its name and lent Shenzhen the old byname Pengcheng, the City of Peng, that predates the modern metropolis by centuries. Its stone gates still stand.
Beyond the fortress the draw is the shore itself, the beaches and headlands of the Dapeng Peninsula that reach out between Dapeng Bay and the open sea, far from the towers of Longgang District inland.
What is the history of Dapeng New District?
The name is older than the borough. Dapeng Fortress was raised in 1394 as a Ming garrison guarding this stretch of coast, and its walls became so bound up with the wider settlement that Shenzhen still answers to the byname Pengcheng drawn from it. The borough itself is young.
Dapeng New District was carved out of Longgang District in 2011, gathering the whole peninsula into one administration and setting a fresh boundary with Pingshan District along its landward neck.

Dapeng New District covers roughly 295 square kilometres of the Dapeng Peninsula in south-eastern Shenzhen, a hilly, sea-wrapped tongue of land where the three subdistricts of Dapeng, Kuichong, and Nan'ao meet the water of Dapeng Bay well beyond Longgang District.
