About Futian

Where to stay in Futian

Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.

Futian is where Shenzhen keeps its office towers, and hotels rise among them. Base yourself near the civic axis if you want the Shenzhen Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art & Planning Exhibition and the Futian Art Museum within a short metro hop. The trade crowd stays close to Huaqiangbei, the electronics market whose story fills the HQB Museum a few blocks over.

Choose which slice of Futian fits your visit. The district is compact enough to cross by rail.

About Futian

What are the main landmarks in Futian?

The museums cluster tight in Futian. The Shenzhen Museum and the Museum of Contemporary Art & Planning Exhibition anchor the civic centre, while the Guan Shanyue Art Museum and the newer Futian Art Museum carry the district's painting and design halls. Nearby stands the Christian Shenzhen Church, and the willing ox statue, cast to mark the city breaking new ground, faces the government forecourt.

A short ride apart, the HQB Museum retells the Huaqiangbei electronics trade that built the district's reputation. It is a lot of culture for one district.

What is the history of Futian?

Futian grew up as Shenzhen did. Once field and fishpond on the edge of the settlement, the district was chosen to hold the new city's seat of government, and the civic axis was laid out to carry the museums and halls that followed. The willing ox statue, an ox straining to break ground, was set outside that government centre to stand for the whole experiment.

Huaqiangbei turned from factory sheds into a warren of electronics stalls. Growth wrote the district's story.

Where is Futian?

Futian occupies the middle of Shenzhen, a dense grid of towers and museum plazas set back from the boundary Shenzhen shares with Hong Kong.
