Each area has its own feel; here's who each one suits.
Two urban districts hold the beds. Yulin's built-up area is split between them, and a room in either sits close to Zhenwu Pavilion and the Shiyi Tower, the two structures most visitors put on a first day. The rest is county ground.
Rong County and Beiliu City lie out in the wider prefecture, far enough that reaching the Modern Buildings of Rong County from a central bed means a planned trip rather than a walk after breakfast. Xielu Villa pulls in a third direction. Anyone whose interest is the villa rather than the pavilion should check where it stands before booking, because Yulin's territory covers thousands of square kilometres and its named sites are not gathered into one quarter.
Beiliu City works as an alternative base. A night there suits travellers moving on through the prefecture rather than circling back, and it puts the county end of Yulin within easy reach. Central beds still win for most.
If you want Zhenwu Pavilion, the Shiyi Tower and the ordinary streets of the city inside a short walk, the two urban districts stay the practical answer, and the rest can be reached from them by road.

What is Yulin known for?
Yulin's Chinese name changed in 1956 from 鬱林, a written form that sounds identical in Standard Mandarin but not in the Yue Chinese spoken locally, which is why the older romanization Watlam survives beside the modern one. Zhenwu Pavilion anchors the rest. Shiyi Tower belongs to the same inherited stock of building, and Xielu Villa and the Modern Buildings of Rong County extend it well beyond the two urban districts.

What is the history of Yulin?
Yulin has carried two names. The written form 鬱林 was replaced in 1956 by 玉林, a change that made no difference in Standard Mandarin, where the two are homophones, but a considerable one in the Yue Chinese of the area. Watlam is the older sound.
That romanization follows the historical name as it was said in Yue rather than in Mandarin, so one city ended up with two spellings in Latin letters and one of them fell out of use. The built heritage runs deeper than the name. Shiyi Tower is the piece the city is usually introduced with, and Zhenwu Pavilion is the other structure that predates the modern prefecture by a long way.
Rong County kept its own fabric. The Modern Buildings of Rong County are listed as a group, which is a different kind of preservation from a single monument and reflects a period when whole streets went up at once. Xielu Villa belongs to that later layer too.
What holds all of it together is administrative: Yulin is one of the fourteen prefecture-level cities of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, and its built-up area, two urban districts alongside Beiliu City, is where the modern city actually sits.

Yulin spreads wide for a city. Its territory covers thousands of square kilometres of tropical country north of the equator, of which the two urban districts and Beiliu City account only for the built-up share. Rong County lies out in that space.
The country around Yulin, rather than its streets, is what draws people locally, and Zhenwu Pavilion, Xielu Villa and the Shiyi Tower sit scattered through it instead of lined up in one centre.
What is the climate of Yulin?
Warmth here is the tropical kind. Yulin sits north of the equator inside that band, so the growing season across its county ground runs long and the difference between the two urban districts and Beiliu City is a matter of streets rather than of weather. Damp comes with it.
Structures such as Zhenwu Pavilion and the Shiyi Tower have stood through that humidity for generations, which is part of what makes their survival worth protecting.
How do you get to Yulin?
Arrivals land in the urban districts. Yulin's two built-up districts are where the roads through this part of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region converge, and they make the practical entry point for anyone heading further into the prefecture. Beiliu City is the second node.
Reaching Rong County, Xielu Villa or the Modern Buildings of Rong County means leaving that core by road, since the sites Yulin is listed for lie spread across thousands of square kilometres rather than gathered at the point of arrival.
