The practical side of choosing where to sleep.
The river frontage is the length of the place. Rheinhausen holds over ten and a half kilometres of Rhine bank west of the dyke, with a foreland several hundred metres wide beyond it to the north, and the ground lies between twenty-three and thirty-six metres on the middle Lower Rhine plain. Five parts make it up.
Rheinhausen-Mitte carries Atrop and Schwarzenberg, Hochemmerich carries Asterlagen and Werthausen, Bergheim carries Oestrum, Trompet and Winkelhausen, Friemersheim carries Bliersheim, Hohenbudberg and Mühlenberg, and Rumeln-Kaldenhausen was a commune of its own. Moers and Krefeld are the neighbours.

What are the main landmarks in Rheinhausen?
This is administrative country rather than sightseeing country. The Amtsgericht for the Bezirk sits in Duisburg, the Landschaftsverband is the Rheinland and the tax office is Duisburg-West, so the institutions a resident deals with are mostly across the river. The Rhine dyke is the one landscape feature.
It runs the whole length of the Bezirk and separates the built ground from the foreland, which is what gives Rheinhausen its long thin shape. One link reaches much further. The Bezirk keeps a partnership with Sedgefield Borough in County Durham in northern England.
What is the history of Rheinhausen?
Rheinhausen was its own town until 1974. It belonged to the Kreis Moers as a kreisangehörige Stadt, and the Ruhrgebiet-Gesetz ended that on 1 January 1975 by making it a Bezirk of Duisburg. One of its parts came in already independent.
Rumeln-Kaldenhausen had been a commune in its own right before the same reform folded it into the new Bezirk alongside Rheinhausen-Mitte, Hochemmerich, Bergheim and Friemersheim. The names below those are older than any of it. Atrop, Schwarzenberg, Asterlagen, Werthausen, Oestrum, Trompet, Winkelhausen, Bliersheim, Hohenbudberg and Mühlenberg all survive as Ortsteile, which is how a merged town keeps its earlier map.

Rheinhausen covers 38.68 square kilometres on the left bank of the Rhine in the middle Lower Rhine plain, west of the Rhine dyke, in the Regierungsbezirk Düsseldorf of North Rhine-Westphalia, with Moers and Krefeld as its neighbouring towns.
