Where to stay in Haarzopf

Where the beds are, and what that means for the visit.

One crossroads organises the whole place. Haarzopf spreads in four directions from the Erbach junction, along the Hatzper Straße east and west, the Humboldtstraße north and the Raadter Straße south, and the junction takes its name from the family that once owned the ground there. The shops are on those streets.

A handful of businesses and pubs stand around the crossing and along the Humboldtstraße and Hatzper Straße, with the Gemeinschaftsgrundschule on the Raadter Straße. Everything else is housing, woods and farmland.

About Haarzopf

What are the main landmarks in Haarzopf?

One moated house survives from the estate era. Haus Stein is first mentioned on Haarzopf ground in 1360 and was built up into a Wasserburg around 1550, which makes it the oldest standing thing in the Stadtteil. Four farms carry the older record.

The Birkmannshof and the Eichholzhof were the two given away in 1215, and the Neulenhof and the Scheppershof of the count of Isenberg and the Bowermannshof of the Johanniter hospital at Duisburg also lay on Haarzopf ground. The name is a stream. Appe means running water and Hartz has been read as stag or as wood, so Hartzappe would be the wood brook or the stag brook, probably the stream that now runs through Haarzopf as the Steinbach.

What is the history of Haarzopf?

The first mention is a gift to Werden. Counts of Berg gave Hartzappe to the abbey of Werden in 1215, or more exactly the two Haarzopf farms Birkmannshof and Eichholzhof, and the place belonged to the lordship of Broich through the late Middle Ages and the early modern period. The name wore down over centuries.

Haftzbeek appears in 1582 with Beek for the brook, and from that came Harzper and then Hatzper, with Haarzopf the form used since 1830. A moated house came between. Haus Stein is first named in 1360 and was rebuilt as a Wasserburg about 1550.

Then the administration moved it repeatedly. Haarzopf belonged to the Mülheim municipality from 1808, fell to the new Landbürgermeisterei Mülheim in 1847, became part of the Bürgermeisterei Heißen in 1879, went to the Landkreis Essen when the Landkreis Mülheim an der Ruhr was dissolved in 1910, and has belonged to the city of Essen since 1 April 1915.

Where is Haarzopf?

Haarzopf lies in the southwest of Essen with the Mülheim Stadtteil Heißen to the west, Fulerum to the north, the Margarethenhöhe to the east and Schuir to the south, spreading from the Erbach junction along four streets.
