Heisingen is loose residential building around an old village core, with nature reserves on several sides, which makes it a quiet base above the Ruhr valley. The Wottelfest fills the core on the last weekend of August, its name taken from Wottel, the local word for a carrot. Bredeney lies west.

What are the main landmarks in Heisingen?
Haus Heisingen and Haus Scheppen are the old seats, and the Bergbau- und Heimatmuseum in the Paulushof keeps the mining and local history. The Korte-Klippe in the Schellenberger Wald, near the Jagdhaus Schellenberg, looks out over the Ruhr valley and the Baldeneysee. An old water mill and the Schleuse Rote Mühle sit in the Heisinger Ruhrauen, and the Zeche Carl Funke left its machine house and a workers' settlement.
The old town hall dates from 1910.
What is the history of Heisingen?
Heisingen was first mentioned in a charter of 24 February 796, when Heinrich von der Ruhr gave his clearing in the Heissiwald to the future Saint Liudger. Liudger founded the monastery of Werden about 800, and it held land here from the ninth century. The abbey's rent register listed twenty-three farms in 1370, all belonging to its two main holdings, Barkhof and Viehhausen.
Secularisation took them in 1802. Seven were still farmed in 1930, and in 1955 the last two farmers in the Oberdorf gave up.
Where is Heisingen?
Heisingen lies in a loop of the Ruhr, with Überruhr and Byfang across the water to the east and Kupferdreh and Fischlaken to the south. Bredeney follows west, then Rellinghausen and Stadtwald to the north, where the Heisinger Bach makes the boundary. The ground falls from the high village core towards the Ruhr.
The Schellenberger Wald nature reserve adjoins it.
