About Vingst
What are the main landmarks in Vingst?
St. Theodor and the Redeemer Church are the churches of Vingst. The Vingster Hof, built before 1180, still stands, and the house of the old mayoralty on Heßhofstraße now serves as a youth centre. St. Elisabeth lies a short way off in Höhenberg, to the north.
What is the history of Vingst?
Vingst is first recorded in 1003 as Vinhem, in a deed of gift from Archbishop Heribert of Köln to Deutz Abbey. The name probably comes from vinitor, Latin for vine-dresser. For centuries it stayed rural, centred on Heßhofplatz.
From 1900 to 1910 Vingst and Gremberg formed a mayoralty of their own under Aloys Kuth. Then came the housing. Emergency houses went up on farmland along Würzburger Straße in 1947 and 1948, the Schweden-Siedlung and the Siedlung Vingst followed, and within a few years the village had become a workers' suburb.
Where is Vingst?
Vingst lies on the lower terrace of the Rhine, on ground that was once marshy. The Vingster Ring divides it from Ostheim to the east, the Sieg railway embankment from Humboldt/Gremberg to the south-west and the railway to Troisdorf from Kalk to the west. To the north, no built line marks the border with Höhenberg.
