Rathausplatz is the hinge of this quarter. Rooms are close to everything. Hotels here put the Kiel Opera House, the Stadtgalerie and St Nicholas Church within a few minutes on foot, and Altstadt begins immediately beyond the square.
If you want one base for the city's civic centre and its stages, Vorstadt is the obvious choice, with Damperhof and Südfriedhof quieter alternatives a short walk out.

What are the main landmarks in Vorstadt?
The Kiel Opera House and the town hall tower stand over Rathausplatz, and St Nicholas Church holds the older ground at the Altstadt end of the quarter. The Stadtgalerie adds the art. Vorstadt also holds the Ostseehalle, the city's large events hall, and the Sophienhof shopping centre.
What is the history of Vorstadt?
Vorstadt began in 1572. By then the old town had grown so dense that a Kiel citizen was first allowed to settle outside it. With Brunswik to the north, the fjord to the east and the Kleiner Kiel to the west, the town could only spread south over the Holstenbrücke, and building straggled up the field paths to the Kuhberg as Kuhstede, later called Vorstadt.
The street name Kleiner Kuhberg still recalls the village of Kuhberg. The quarter now carries the city's public buildings, the Rathaus on Rathausplatz and the Kiel Opera House among them.
