About Puerta Bonita
What are the main landmarks in Puerta Bonita?
The Puerta Bonita itself is an iron gate, once known as the Puerta de Madrid. An English foundry made it in the 19th century. It was lost in a crane accident in the 1980s, and the city restored it, with its small pavilions, in June 2005.
The plaza de Carabanchel Bajo is now pedestrianised. The old town hall and the church of the former village stand on it.
What is the history of Puerta Bonita?
Puerta Bonita belonged to the old village of Carabanchel Bajo, and in the early 20th century it was a summer retreat of the nobility of the capital. In 1913 the first stone was laid for the Colonia de la Prensa, the first journalists' town in Spain, of modernist villas with gardens. Some survive.
The Civil War front ran through the Carabanchels in 1936. In the 1950s state-protected housing multiplied the population.
