Nou Moles, Valencia — Area Guide & Where to Stay

Nou Moles is a barrio of Olivereta. The Séquia de Favara drove the mill that named it, from Valencia's Avinguda del Cid to the Turia.

Where to stay in Nou Moles

How the choice of base plays out on the ground.

Nou Moles covers 74 hectares. It is a dense residential barrio of 74 hectares built as flats, schools and corner shops, and the hotel supply sits elsewhere in Valencia. What the barrio has instead of rooms is the metro.

Avinguda del Cid station, on Metrovalencia lines 3, 5 and 9, opens across the avenue that closes the southern boundary, and Nou d'Octubre station stands a few hundred metres west in Soternes, facing the Hospital General Universitari de València. If you are here for a month rather than a weekend, this is a Valencian street that was never arranged around visitors, with a metro platform at the end of it.

About Nou Moles

What are the main landmarks in Nou Moles?

Five buildings here carry a Valencian heritage listing, not one. The largest is the Presó Model de València, the radial prison Joaquín María Belda laid out over some 110,000 square metres at the western edge; it stopped taking prisoners in 1991 and reopened in 2010 as the Complex Administratiu 9 d'octubre, where the Generalitat Valenciana now keeps more than two thousand staff. A few streets north, on Carrer de la Democràcia, the Antigua Cárcel de Mujeres de Valencia closed in that same year and now holds a state primary school.

Two farmhouses outlived the huerta they were built to work: the Alqueria de Julià, listed as a bien de interés cultural, and the Alqueria de Ponsa on Carrer de l'Art Major de la Seda. The fifth is industrial. Vicente Rodríguez Martín built the Nou Moles power station on Plaça de Nou Moles in 1908, in Valencian brick modernismo, and it is listed as well.

What is the history of Nou Moles?

This was huerta first. The Séquia de Favara, one of the eight canals answering to the Water Tribunal of the plain of Valencia, crossed the fields here and turned the nine-millstone mill that named the place; the mill burned down in 1929, and the canal itself now runs buried under Carrer del Brasil. Building had already begun at the far end of the ground.

Joaquín María Belda started his prison in 1889 on the radial Philadelphia plan, for 528 inmates. In some months of 1939 and 1940 it held nearly thirty times that many. The Presó Model de València outlasted the regime that filled it, gave Luis García Berlanga the set for Todos a la cárcel in 1993, and became government offices in 2010.

Where is Nou Moles?

Four edges hold the barrio, and three of them are streets. The Avinguda del Cid runs along the south, bringing the end of the A-3 in from Madrid; Carrer del Nou d'Octubre closes the west; the Avinguda de Benito Pérez Galdós, laid on the old Camino de Tránsitos ring, closes the east. The north edge is not a street.

It is the dry bed of the Turia, landscaped as the Jardí del Túria, with the Passeig de la Petxina along its lip. Inside those four lines sit 74 hectares, which the Ajuntament de València numbers as barrio 7.1. Tres Forques lies south across the avenue and Soternes west, La Petxina and Arrancapins are east, and the district of Olivereta gathers all five.
