What are the main landmarks in Linjat?
Linjat is short on sights of its own. The granite Kallion kirkko stands at the top of its streets, the one true landmark of the lines, its tower a marker over this side of central Helsinki. The rest lies a tram ride away.
South across the centre rise the Helsingin tuomiokirkko, the Ateneum, and the Nykytaiteen museo Kiasma, the great public buildings of the capital. North, in Alppiharju, the Linnanmäki fairground turns its wheels within sight of the lines, so the appeal of Linjat is its position rather than monuments packed inside the grid.
What is the history of Linjat?
Linjat takes its name from its streets. The numbered lines were laid out as central Helsinki spread north onto the Kallio ridge, a tight grid of workers' apartment blocks rising below the hill. The plan was plain and dense.
Street after street of stone tenements filled the slope, and the granite Kallion kirkko was raised at the crest to crown the district. Through the decades the lines stayed a close-built quarter wedged between Kallio above and Sörnäinen to the east, keeping the worker's grain that still sets this part of Helsinki apart.
Where is Linjat?
Linjat lies in southern Helsinki in southern Finland, a compact grid of numbered streets on the slope below the Kallion kirkko, with Kallio above it and Sörnäinen to the east.
