The Canal Saint Martin is the fixed point, with restaurants and cafés along both banks. The arrondissement also holds two of the big railway termini of Paris, the Gare du Nord and the Gare de l'Est, and the two monumental gates, the Porte Saint-Denis and the Porte Saint-Martin, raised after Louis XIV had the city walls pulled down in 1670. Theatres still gather around the Porte Saint-Martin.
The Church of Saint-Laurent and the Church of Saint-Vincent-de-Paul stand here too. For the great museums a stay means riding out, to the Centre Georges Pompidou toward Saint-Merri. The Sacré-Cœur rises toward Montmartre.
What is the history of Paris 10 Entrepôt?
Two pasts sit on top of each other. The 10th was a sleepy faubourg in the Paris of the eighteenth century and an industrial centre afterwards, and the Canal Saint Martin belongs to that working phase rather than to any grand plan for the city. The arrondissement dates from 1860.
Cafés and restaurants came to the canal banks much later, along with the cyclists and skaters who share the car-free hours. The industry itself has since gone.
