What is the history of Paris 19 Buttes-Chaumont?
Paris 19 Buttes-Chaumont was built on gypsum and cattle. Its slopes were quarried for plaster until the pits were re-landscaped as the parc des Buttes-Chaumont in 1867, while the flat ground east of the canal held the slaughterhouses whose cast-iron market hall survives as the Grande halle de la Villette. The arrondissement itself dates from 1860, when Paris took in the villages beyond its tollgates and Ledoux's barrière Saint-Martin stopped collecting duty at the head of the Bassin de la Villette.
Meat left in the 1970s. The parc de la Villette took the ground, and the streets keep almost nothing of either trade.
