About Roquette
What are the main landmarks in Roquette?
The Musée du Fumeur and the Gymnase Japy stand in the quartier. Close by are the Church of St. Margaret and the Église luthérienne de Bon-Secours. The Musée Édith Piaf lies toward Ménilmontant.
West of the boulevard Beaumarchais, a kilometre or so toward the Marais, are the Musée Carnavalet, the Musée Picasso and the Maison de Victor Hugo.
What is the history of Roquette?
A family called Rocquet long claimed to have given the place its name at the end of the 16th century. Deeds say otherwise. They speak of the Rochette from 1470, after a yellow flower that grew around it.
Most of the housing is modest and classical, built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, apart from the blocks raised on the site of the old prison along the square. Building after 1945 left the grain dense, with small shops and workshops still at work.
