Koukaki is a residential neighbourhood on the southern side of the Acropolis, within the city of Athens. It stays quiet and local. Its streets begin just below the Acropolis Museum and run downhill toward Syngrou Avenue, past low-rise apartment blocks and café-lined lanes. Many visitors base themselves here for the short walk into Plaka.

Koukaki rewards a certain kind of traveller. You get the ancient sites close by but quiet streets after dark, with the Acropolis Museum only a few minutes uphill. Plaka, Monastiraki, and the Acropolis are an easy walk away.
Most rooms are in small hotels and guesthouses near Syngrou-Fix metro. Choose it for calm nights and sightseeing on foot; for nightlife, look instead to Psyri or Gazi.

What are the main landmarks in Koukaki?
Koukaki's own signature sight is the Acropolis Museum, whose glass galleries stand at the top of the neighbourhood on Dionysiou Areopagitou. From the museum the pedestrian promenade curves west below the Acropolis toward Filopappou Hill. The Philopappos Monument crowns that hill, a Roman-era tomb reached by stone paths through the pines.
Beyond these, Koukaki keeps few monuments of its own; its pleasures are the cafés of Drakou and the walk up to the rock. The classical sites lie north.
What is the history of Koukaki?
Koukaki grew as a residential quarter in the early twentieth century, when Athens spread south of the Acropolis onto the lower ground. The neighbourhood is generally said to take its name from Georgios Koukakis, a craftsman whose metal-bed workshop stood in the area. Rows of interwar and post-war apartment blocks gave it the low, dense street pattern it keeps.
On its eastern edge, the Fix brewery on Syngrou Avenue was long the district's landmark of industry; the Syngrou-Fix metro station still carries the name. It stayed a plain local quarter.
Where is Koukaki?
Koukaki lies south of the Acropolis and its museum, bounded on the east by Syngrou Avenue. Filopappou Hill rises along its western side, separating it from Petralona and Thiseio. To the north the pedestrian Dionysiou Areopagitou promenade traces the Acropolis south slope; Makriyanni adjoins that corner, and Neos Kosmos sits below to the south.
Veïkou Street runs through its centre.
