Pangrati takes its name from an ancient sanctuary of Hercules Pancrates that stood on these slopes in antiquity. For centuries it lay as open ground beyond the walls. That changed when the Panathenaic Stadium was rebuilt in white marble and hosted the first modern Olympic Games of 1896, drawing the city eastward.
The First Cemetery of Athens was laid out nearby as the city's official burial ground. Apartment blocks later filled the streets between.
Where is Pangrati?
Pangrati lies just east of the historic centre, its northern frontage running along Vasilissis Sofias Avenue. Vasileos Konstantinou Avenue and Vassileos Alexandrou Avenue mark its western and southern reach toward the Panathenaic Stadium. Kolonaki lies across the avenue.
