Psyri is a small, gentrified quarter in central Athens, set just north of Monastiraki. Once a district of leather workshops and craftsmen, it now fills after dark with mezedopoleia, bars and live-music tavernas. Its lanes are tight. The name also appears as Psiri or Psyrri.

Staying in Psyri puts a visitor in the middle of the old town's nightlife, a short walk from Monastiraki and Hadrian's Library at its southern edge. Beds here run to boutique hotels and short-stay apartments carved from former workshops, and the choice is smaller than in Plaka or Koukaki. Rooms above the livelier lanes catch music and voices late into the night, so light sleepers tend to book on the quieter streets toward Kerameikos.

What are the main landmarks in Psyri?
The quarter's landmarks are modest and local. Its heart is Iroon Square, ringed by tavernas and cafes, with Plateia Agion Anargyron and the small Byzantine church of Agioi Anargyroi a block to the north. Between them run lanes of old cobblers' and metal workshops, many now bars.
The grander monuments sit just outside its bounds. Hadrian's Library rises at the Monastiraki edge to the south, and the Ancient Agora of Athens lies a short walk beyond.
What is the history of Psyri?
Psyri grew up as a working-class quarter of craftsmen, its lanes packed with cobblers, tanners and small workshops. In the nineteenth century it earned a rough name as the haunt of the koutsavakides, the swaggering street toughs of old Athens, whose bravado fed the early rebetiko songs. Then the trades faded.
The lanes fell quiet for decades, their workshops shuttered. A wave of restoration turned those same buildings into bars and tavernas and drew crowds back to Iroon Square.
Where is Psyri?
The quarter sits between Monastiraki to the south and the Kerameikos and Metaxourgeio districts to the west and northwest. Ermou Street runs along its lower edge, while Athinas Street forms the eastern boundary, beyond which lies the city's central market. Athinas climbs north toward Omonoia.
Iroon Square anchors the middle of the grid of narrow streets.
