Not every neighbourhood fits every trip — here's what each one is good for.
Rooms are a new-town matter. Luk Keng offers the shore and little else, so anyone wanting a bed within North District generally ends up in the Fanling and Sheung Shui pair, the built-up ground that holds nearly all of the district's housing. The walk west to Nam Chung, or east to Kuk Po, is the sort of thing the day here is built around, and the inlet is the reason to come at all.
Sleep in the new town if you want shops and a street grid, or take a rural room on the shore if the water is the point.

What are the main landmarks in Luk Keng?
No monument stands over Luk Keng. What the place has instead is the water: Starling Inlet opening north toward Sha Tau Kok, with Kuk Po on the same southern shore to the east and Nam Chung round the bend to the west. The sights here are unbuilt.
North District keeps its built recreation well to the southwest, in the Fanling and Sheung Shui new town, where the Lung Sum Avenue Sports Centre and the Wo Hing Sports Centre serve the housing blocks rather than the shore.
What is the history of Luk Keng?
The administrative line here is recent. Luk Keng came under North District in 1982, when Hong Kong sorted its ground into 18 districts and gave the northernmost of them the top corner of the New Territories, from the Fanling and Sheung Shui towns out to the water at Starling Inlet. The names on the shore are older.
Luk Keng, Nam Chung, and Kuk Po all sat along the same inlet, opposite Sha Tau Kok, before any boundary gathered them under one heading.
