Three spellings survive on old maps. Ma Yau Tong takes its name from the village of the same name, and early 20th-century maps of the area record the place under two other forms, Lau Tong and Ma Lau Tong. That variation matters for a boundary place.
The pass carries the border of New Kowloon and the New Territories, which is why a short stretch of hillside collects more names than its size suggests.
