What are the main landmarks in Pui O?
Pui O has no monuments to list. Its draw is Lantau South Country Park, whose boundary runs along the edge of the area and gives the place a wall of protected ground instead of a skyline. Holiday camping is the other fixture, and it is what pulls visitors out here from the rest of Hong Kong.
Village fabric supplies the rest. Lo Wai, San Wai, Lo Uk and Ham Tin each hold a cluster of houses, some of them let to visitors, and together they give the area whatever built character it has.
What is the history of Pui O?
Pui O carried a longer name. The area was formerly Lo Pui O (螺杯澳), and the shorter form is the one that came to be used for this stretch of Lantau Island. Settlement here is spread across four villages rather than gathered into one: Lo Wai (老圍), San Wai (新圍), Lo Uk (羅屋) and Ham Tin (鹹田).
That pattern still holds. What has been added since is a visitor trade, with holiday camping and rented village houses layered onto a South Lantau community that predates both.
