About Tung Chung New Town

Where to stay in Tung Chung New Town

Each area has its own feel; here's who each one suits.

Beds cluster in Tung Chung. The commercial, residential and community facilities of Tung Chung New Town are concentrated in that one core, so almost every room sits within walking reach of the shops and the Tung Chung Man Tung Road Sports Centre. Quieter ground lies east along the coast, past Tai Ho Wan and Siu Ho Wan, where reclaimed land runs out to the hills of Lantau Island.

Choose the core for convenience, the coastal edge for space.

About Tung Chung New Town

What are the main landmarks in Tung Chung New Town?

One landmark carries the district's name. The Tung Chung Man Tung Road Sports Centre stands in the built-up core of Tung Chung, the part of the new town where the commercial and community buildings are gathered rather than scattered across the reclaimed shore. Beyond it the ground opens out toward Tai Ho Wan and Siu Ho Wan, bays on the northern coast of Lantau Island that the new town was drawn to include.

Little else here is monumental.

What is the history of Tung Chung New Town?

Hong Kong drew up nine new towns, and this one was the last of them, laid out across Tung Chung, Tai Ho Wan, Siu Ho Wan and the parts of northeast Lantau Island between them. Reclaimed land along the coast tied those separate pieces together. The scheme carried the name North Lantau New Town at first.

Because the commercial, residential and community facilities all settled into Tung Chung, official government documents took up the name Tung Chung New Town instead. One new town covers the Islands District.

Where is Tung Chung New Town?

Tung Chung New Town covers about 8.3 square kilometres of the northern coast of Lantau Island, including the reclaimed shore between Tung Chung and Siu Ho Wan.
