The parish churches anchor Mejaši. Close by stands the Church of St. Lawrence of Pazdigrad, serving the eastern quarters of Split, while the ruined Roman city of Salona spreads across the plain of Solin just below the neighbourhood. Two shrines mark that older ground: the Basilica Manastirine, a cemetery church raised over early Christian graves, and the small pilgrimage island of Gospin otok on the river at Solin.

What is the history of Mejaši (Split)?
Salona shaped this ground. The Roman city that once ruled the coast lay on the Solin plain immediately below Mejaši, and its cemeteries left the martyr shrine of Basilica Manastirine on the slope where the neighbourhood now meets the fields. Split itself grew from that older centre after Salona fell.
Mejaši took its present residential form far later, as housing climbed the hillside above the ruins and the pilgrimage island of Gospin otok on the Solin river.

Mejaši sits inland. It covers a compact wedge of hillside on the eastern side of Split, sloping down toward the flats of Solin, where the neighbourhood's streets give way to the old approaches of Salona.
