Split 3 grew out of the Roman core that the Temple of Jupiter still marks. Rome laid the first stones. Over the centuries the old town spread west into the fishermen's quarter of Varoš, where the Church of St. Nicholas in Varoš rose above a knot of narrow lanes, and later the district gained the museums and churches that fill it now.
