What are the main landmarks in Mertojak?

Parish churches mark this ground. Split's own Church of St. Lawrence of Pazdigrad stands just east of Mertojak, serving the residential quarters that climb the hillside of eastern Split, while the Church of Our Lady of Pojišan sits a short way west toward the older locality of Pojišan. Between them the streets of Mertojak run past schools, small shops, and the apartment terraces that fill this part of Split above the bay at Žnjan.

What is the history of Mertojak?

Housing shaped Mertojak. The district took its residential form as Split spread eastward over the hillside above Trstenik and Žnjan, filling the ground between the old shore quarters and the parish of Pazdigrad with apartment blocks and family streets. Its neighbour Split 3 grew the same way, part of the broad expansion that carried the city up from the harbour and out toward the eastern bays.

Split's own Church of St. Lawrence of Pazdigrad kept the older parish name on the ridge as the newer terraces of Mertojak rose beside it.

Where is Mertojak?

Mertojak sits inland from the sea. It covers a compact wedge of hillside in eastern Split, rising behind the coastal quarters of Trstenik and Žnjan and running up against the streets of neighbouring Pazdigrad.
